Still ticked at being called "dirty"
Thursday, 18 October 2007

I recently heard someone who was describing a guy who was dirty and greasy as looking like a carny. It immediately pissed me off but I had to admit that there was a time when it was true.

Maybe sometimes it is still a fact that carnies work long, hard hours in a dirty environment and are unable to clean up due to circumstance.

On most shows today and certainly all of the major traveling carnival companies, you won't find a dirty carny unless you sneak in off hours. Carnivals today have longer lists of "dress codes" and personal hygiene than banks. Outdoor entertainment is big business and all carnivals are out to provide a clean family experience.

Carnivals like everything else in life are changing.

Change is great. Even some very small shows provide bunkhouses with showers on the lot. I'll bet their people aren't sleeping on stock curled up in the corner of some joint anymore either.

Myself, I really miss the Girlie Shows and the Wild Man From Borneo. Change isn't always fun.

Do you brush in the grandstand?

It happened again today. I overheard someone say "he was dirty and greasy, sort of like a carny".

Back in my day, carnies worked at least a 14 hour day, if not longer. We put those hours in on a fairgrounds in Alabama or a parking lot in Salina. If there was a shower available at all you were probably sharing it with the townies from the dairy barn.

All but the first few hours of your day were usually so jammin' that you sent some mark off to the grab for some greasy or drippy or just plain gross lot food.

Did you ever brush your teeth in a grandstand donniker with 200 Alice Cooper fans wanting that sink?

The more things change . . .

You already know the rest of it, . . . the more they stay the same.

I read an article in the Washington Post this morning that reminded me once again that the Internet is the world's largest midway.

Seems this Junior Johnson guy and some fellas from AOL Time Warner got together and tried to make it look like their respective joints out here on the cyber-midway were doing better than they were. Something about attracting investors. Normal midway stuff.

Except AOL ticked off Big Brother, who is pretty much the lot man on this midway. Apparently, poor Junior just made the wrong friends.

So, Charles "Junior" Johnson is in court. This isn't quite how we'd have handled it on the other midway but it would have definitely gotten taken care of.
